Provide a reading of Nosferatu and discuss how it established the Vampire sub-genre Essay Example

Give a perusing of Nosferatu and talk about how it built up the Vampire sub Give a perusing of Nosferatu and talk about how it built up the Vampire sub-type Paper Give a perusing of Nosferatu and talk about how it built up the Vampire sub-type Paper Paper Topic: Film Nosferatu is a name that summoned dread into the hearts of early filmgoers. A perfect work of art of quiet film, the quality of this work of art and the class it generated stands demonstration of the capacity of German Expressionist F. W Murnau. Nosferatu spearheaded the Vampire sub-sort of movies. It was the first of its kind, just positioned in the class reflectively. Innumerable vampire films, kid's shows, representations, banalities and jokes have showed up after some time, each drawing something from the first vampire film none would exist as we probably am aware them in the event that it was not for Murnaus quiet bad dream. It was Nosferatu that created a large number of the nonexclusive shows one has generally expected from a vampire film. Nibble marks, teeth, blood, caskets and desolate strongholds lit faintly from the creepy sparkle of the full moon all element in Murnaus film. It was Nosferatu which immovably planted these eerie pictures into the brains of movie producers to come, each turning into a drained banality of an old type of movies. Take, for instance, the notable fantasy that daylight will wreck a vampire unequivocally. Bram Stokers Dracula (the novel of which Nosferatu was created from) doesn't make reference to daylight killing a vampire, just decreasing its capacity. Murnau included this idea into his adjustment to which practically all vampire movies to follow have replicated. Be that as it may, while being the primary film of a well known class, Nosferatu still holds subtleties which are altogether different to the movies which acquired from it in future. The most perceptible is the vampires appearance. At the point when one considers Vampire they quickly picture the appealling Bela Lugosi dim master, overflowing modernity and sex advance. Nosferatu contains none of this. Check Orlok, the Vampire, is a sickening bestial wreckage of bat-like ears, rat highlights, pointy rodent like teeth and a slouched back. Nosferatu moves gradually and agonizingly, wearing his Undeath as a revile as opposed to a dim blessing. To be sure, the name Nosferatu, by which Orlok is additionally known, implies Plague-Carrier. Check Orlok is liberated from all the over-done Dracula prosaisms, this huge vampire taking a gander at home in a sewer than a palatial cheteau in the Carpathians. The account of Nosferatu itself gets vigorously from the Bram Stoker tale Dracula. The two accounts are practically indistinguishable, to the point that Stokers little girl had a go at having all duplicates of the film crushed. An exemplary story of good versus detestable had a basic Equilibrium-Disequilibrium-New Equilibrium storyline. We see Hutter and Ellen cheerful in their wedded life until Hutter is brought into the snare of the vampiric Count Orlok, with the Nosferatu going after Hutter and his better half. In any case, the new-harmony is definitely not an upbeat consummation. While Orlok kicks the bucket to the beams of the morning sun, Ellen lays dead having relinquished herself to wreck the vampire and the plague it carried with him. The film likewise got done with a low point shot of Orloks mansion does some detestable despite everything sneak inside? Has the scourge of Nosferatu truly been decimated? The film is intended to make individuals uncomfortable and even the movies goals leaves the crowd feeling frightened as opposed to eased. Murnau was a pioneer of the Expressionist development. His film lays intensely on mind-set and topic instead of the character acting. He inspires a sentiment of anxiety through his utilization of lighting and shadow. He twists and overstates shapes into ridiculous extents so as to communicate sentiments with the help of film. For instance, the on-screen characters wear substantial make up and move jerkily or gradually misrepresented so as to communicate a state of mind. The characters don't just exist inside a setting however are visual components that converge with the setting Murnau recounts to his story through the whole mise-en-scene as opposed to his characters every component of this mise-en-scene collaborates and consolidates to make an interesting state of mind and environment. We can see this utilization of mise-en scene to recount to his story all through the film. A significant part of the film is shot in shadow, giving a darker all the more unpleasant air to the film combined with the iris shots, which Murnau utilized, give a sentiment of being caught that there will never be a way out from the dread that stalks Ellen and Hutter. So also Murnau utilizes detail in the whole screen, regularly using the corners, which recommend and shrouded abhorrences prowling in the corners. Murnau likewise utilizes long takes, regularly of pictures of death and rot, which causes inconvenience in the crowd viewing. Murnau utilized progressively representative scenes to communicate the mind-set of the film, for example, those of insects and Venus flytraps. Its not just visual components that add to the production of the movies tone, music also has its impact. Munau called it his Symphony of Terrors a disconnected, harsh and startling clamor that isn't at all piece tuneful. The music of the film is an amazing asset in the narrating of Nosferatu, developing tension or stunning the crowd. Every one of the movies credits consolidate to make unmistakable vibe that doesnt simply recount to the story however lets the crowd feel the story.

The Aspects of Criminal Justice :: Crime Justice Criminals Essays

The Aspects of Criminal Justice There are a wide range of parts of criminal equity arrangement. One specifically is the various speculations of wrongdoing and how they influence the criminal equity framework. The catchphrase The fallen angel caused him to do it was famous in light of the idea that individuals who carried out wrongdoings were delinquents or individuals who didn't follow God. The individuals who didn't follow God were known as apostates and this following prompted the association of chapel and state where torment or execution could transpire that the administration thought to be detestable or a piece of black magic. Since the Middle Ages didn't have equivalent rights for all, ladies and the poor were generally the ones being arraigned. With the entirety of the issues of the occasions, the administration found and made substitutes out of these individuals, and accused them of the difficulties that were happening. As DeKeseredy and Schwartz (1996, p.156) expressed, the m ost widely recognized method of deciding blame was through torment. It was a straightforward framework: on the off chance that you admitted, you were executed: is you didn't admit, the torment proceeded until you passed on. This arrangement of slaughtering individuals was a very much regarded method of running the criminal equity framework. As time passed, the disciplines got some distance from incurring torment on the body and turned more towards perpetrating torment on the spirit. This implied detainment of significant stretches of time was going to occur of executions. A significant scholar in the Classical School of thought is Cesare Beccarria. He was a humble man who composed an article approached Crimes and Punishment.

Twelve Angry Men Essay - 647 Words

Twelve Angry Men is a very interesting play about an unfortunate young man, who was convicted of killing his dad. The worst part was, the young man was only nineteen, and his life was just starting. The jurors listened to all the evidence, then came the hard part, making the decision: guilty, or innocent. Eleven jurors said guilty and only one said innocent. There was a lot of peer pressure involved. I decided to write about different peer pressures three of the jurors used. The three jurors I picked are juror #10, juror #7, and juror #8.The first juror I want to write about is #10. Juror #10 was using a lot of sarcasm, whenever he was trying to prove his point, or prove someone else wrong. One example of #7 using sarcasm would be this quote: quot; Why dont we have them run the trial over...quot; I think this quote clearly shows that juror #7 is trying to convince other jurors, that courts evidence proves the young man is guilty without reasonable doubt. Also to break #8s spirit he used name calling, another kind of peer pressure. I believe this is a very good example: quot; The boy is guilty pal, like the nose on your face.quot; The third and last juror I picked was #8, he was not using sarcasm, nor was he muscle flexing, he was using reasonable ar gument, which helped him convince all the jurors that the young man was innocent. He did not try to convince anybody by screaming at him, on the contrary he tried to go over all the evidence, and he was using intelligent thinking, like trying to calculate exact times, and figure out the correct position of the switch-blade in the chest of the father. He was also trying to recreate a situation to see if indeed one of the witnesses on the stand was lying. The Death Penalty Is Ineffective And Inefficient Form Of...

Execute Justice Not People An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind† (Dear). Gandhi’s moving words still resonates soundly and influences people’s acts today. He conveyed that violence only breeds more violence and people should not allow hate and bitterness consume them to the point where they cannot forgive but to take vengeance upon another as the ultimate solution. Throughout history, various forms of executions such as lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, firing squad and hanging have taken place as a punishment for violent crimes in the United States. The death penalty is an ineffective and inefficient form of punishment and it should be eliminated because it is fundamentally immoral and disrespect for human life, does not deter crime, prolongs the anguish of the victims’ families, costs lots of taxpayers’ money, and worst of all, risks executions of innocent people. No matter how heinous the crime may be, condemning someone to death violates the right to life and subjects the inmate to the ultimate form of cruel, inhumane, degrading, and primitive punishment. The right to life is the most basic right; and without it, all of the other rights and freedoms are somewhat meaningless. English Coursework Essay Conclusion Example For Students

English Coursework Essay Conclusion The purpose of the beginning is for a change of atmosphere, this indicates change of scene. No stage curtains, servants having nothing around them allow them to bring on props for the New Scene. The audiences expectations moving into this scene is that something big and important is going to happen as well as tension, this is due to the servants rushing around getting everywhere ready, an example of the rush and tension is when the first servant gives short commands away with the joint stools, remove the court cupboard, look to the plate. What also could add a lot of tension to the audience is that at the end of the last scene we found out that there is a big feud between the Montagues and the Capulet, we Know that the party is for Capulet, but we also know that Romeo will be attending and he is a Montague. The purpose of the beginning is to change the atmosphere and create a contrast with the previous scene, making the audience eager to watch to see what is going to happen. The audience are eager to continue watching because in the scene before there was a feud, and the audience sense something will happen at the ball. Shakespeare needed to include this section to show the audience that this ball is a big occasion, and the rush of the servants emphasizes this. Capulet jovial and welcoming manner should relax the audience but it does the opposite due to them knowing that Romeo will attend the ball, and the inevitable feeling that Romeo will be recognised. What makes the recognition even more inevitable is that Capulet is at the entrance to the ball Tension is relieved when Romeo is not recognised by Capulet but there is still the feeling that Romeo will be found out someway or another. When Romeo sets eyes on Juliet he is overwhelmed by her presence and beauty, he immediately forgets about Rosalie his love. This contrasts dramatically with his previous behaviour; before this Romeo was depressed that Rosalie did not return his love out of her favour where I am in love. When Romeo speaks about Juliet he speaks in a poetic language o, she doth teach the torches to burn bright. It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night. This poetic language makes the audience focus on Romeo, and in someway makes them feel for him because he is not aggressive, and he is in love and also talks sweetly about his love for Juliet. Romeo says it seems she hangs upon the cheek of night as a rich jewel in an Ethoss ear. This shows that Romeo is amazed by her beauty and presence; Juliet shines out from the rest of the females in the ball and is as precious as a gem. To say this about someone is a big compliment because to be associated with gems and riches in this era is a big thing. Juliet is also being compared to light, which goes with the contrast of light and dark, which is explored throughout the play. Juliet is associated with a dove, which is the symbol of love and peace, while those around her appear sinful and ungainly. Tension is immediately re-established, due to Tibet overhearing Romeo. Tibet is a man of action not thought, he is vindictive and aggressive. The audience have already been witness to this earlier in the play. Tybalts aggressive language is a major contrast to Romeos calm poetic language. Tybalts immediate reaction is to ask for his sword. Tybalt uses rhyming couplets when talking about killing Romeo uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite, to scorn at our solemnity this night. This poetic language makes the fact that Tybalt want to kill Romeo stick in the audiences minds. Some possible humour is added when Capulet tries to remain the genial host even though Tybalt is talking about killing Romeo. He is trying hard to make the guests feel commutable so he jokes. The conflict ends with Tybalt fuming, and he vows to get Romeo, which adds tension to the audience, as they know they will meet again. .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .postImageUrl , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:hover , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:visited , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:active { border:0!important; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:active , .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u737b1e6a3287d694d55eebb292e887ce:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dracula Highlight Repressive Victorian Attitudes Towards Women EssayCapulet will not let Tybalt fight and is determined to get his own way, this again creates tension, because the audience wonder if Tybalt will deceive Capulet which would cause yet another feud. The audience know Capulet will not accept Tybalt deceiving him, because Tybalt is a younger family member. The family dispute between Capulet and Tybalt gives Romeo time to approach his new love Juliet. There is a major contrast now between the feelings of Romeo. Before entering the ball he feared for his life and now the only thing he is thinking about is Juliet. Another contrast is that just before Romeo meeting Juliet there is a big feud between Capulet and Tybalt. It goes from being an angry atmosphere to a peaceful, romantic atmosphere. Strong imagery is used by Shakespeare to show the meaningfulness in their love for each other. They speak in shared rhyming couplets a sonnet (14 line poem of 7 rhyming couplets). Sonnets were love poetry in Shakespeares day, sharing lines of sonnet shows they both have strong feelings for each other, and that they are in perfect harmony. Romeo uses very religious language in the sonnet and this convinces the audience of his sincerity. Romeo uses words like pilgrim, sin, and profane and holy shrine. He sees Juliet as pure; this language also shows th at Romeo worships her. The sharing of the intellectual language will show the audience that they are well matched. Romeo and Juliet are interrupted by the nurse, who reminds them, as well as the audience, that they are not alone, and return them to reality and remind the audience that Romeo is a Montague and Juliet a Capulet. The nurses arrival also informs Romeo of Juliets identity. The nurse relieves the tension slightly when she addresses Romeo comically he that shall lay hold of her shall have the chinks. This relieves the tension because it shows that the nurse has taken a liking to Romeo even though he is a Montague. Ben olio urges Romeo to leave with him, because he thinks they are undiscovered. Away, be gone, the sport is at its best. This creates tension because the audience know that they have been seen and found out. When Juliet discovers Romeos identity, she is distraught; she prophetically states, My grave is like to be my wedding bed. The audience know that link between marriage and death is not to do with Romeo being married, but that he is a Montague. Romeo and Juliet feeling so fatalistic would have a great impact on the audience. Conclusion This scene is a very important if not the most important scene in the play because you discover the feud between the Capulet and the Montagues as well as seeing Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. During this scene the audiences emotions are played with a good deal. At the start the audience feel tension due to the feud, as well as the likely possibility that Romeo will be seen and found out. Then the audience feel calm and passion for Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time. The audience then again feel tension as they realise that Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague, as they wonder what jolliest reaction to this will be.

Asclepius, God of Healing in Greek Roman Mythology

Asclepius, God of Healing in Greek Roman Mythology While the healing god Asclepius is not a major player in Greek mythology, he is a pivotal one. Counted as one of the Argonauts, Asclepius came into contact with many of the major Greek heroes. Asclepius was also a causal figure in a drama played out between Apollo, Death, Zeus, the Cyclops, and Hercules. This story comes to us through Euripides tragedy, Alcestis. The Parents of Asclepius Apollo (the brother of the virginal goddess Artemis) was no more chaste than any of the other (male) gods. His lovers and would-be lovers included Marpessa, Coronis, Daphne (one who got away by having herself transformed into a tree), Arsinoe, Cassandra (who paid for her scorn with the gift of prophecy no one believed), Cyrene, Melia, Eudne, Thero, Psamathe, Philonis, Chrysothemis, Hyacinthos, and Cyparissos. As a result of their union with Apollo, most of the women produced sons. One of these sons was Asclepius. The mother is debated. She may have been Coronis or Arsinoe, but whoever the mother was, she didnt live long enough to give birth to her healing god son. The Creation of Asclepius Apollo was a jealous god who was mightily displeased when a crow revealed that his lover was to marry a mortal, so he punished the messenger by changing the color of the formerly white bird to the now more familiar black. Apollo also punished his lover by burning her, although some say it was Artemis who actually disposed of the faithless Coronis (or Arsinoe). Before Coronis was completely incinerated, Apollo rescued the unborn infant from the flames. A similar event occurred when Zeus rescued the unborn Dionysus from Semele and sewed up the fetus in his thigh. Asclepius may have been born in Epidauros (Epidaurus) of acoustically perfect theater fame [Stephen Bertman: The Genesis of Science]. Asclepius Upbringing - The Centaur Connection The poor, newborn Asclepius needed someone to bring him up, so Apollo thought of the wise centaur Chiron (Cheiron) who seems to have been around forever or at least since the time of Apollos father, Zeus. Chiron roamed the countryside of Crete while the king of the gods was growing up, hiding from his own father. Chiron trained several of the great Greek heroes (Achilles, Actaeon, Aristaeus, Jason, Medus, Patroclus, and Peleus) and willingly undertook the education of Asclepius. Apollo was also a god of healing, but it wasnt he, but Chiron who taught the gods son Asclepius the healing arts. Athena also helped. She gave Asclepius the precious blood of the Gorgon Medusa. The Story of Alcestis The blood of the Gorgon, which Athena gave Asclepius, came from two very different veins. The blood from the right side could heal mankind even from death, while the blood from the left vein could kill, as Chiron would ultimately experience first-hand. Asclepius matured into a capable healer, but after he brought mortals back to life Capaneus and Lycurgus (killed during the war of the Seven Against Thebes), and Hippolytus, son of Theseus a worried Zeus slew Asclepius with a thunderbolt. Apollo was enraged, but getting mad at the king of the gods was futile, so he took out his anger on the creators of the thunderbolts, the Cyclops. Zeus, enraged in his turn, was prepared to hurl Apollo to Tartarus, but another god intervened possibly Apollos mother, Leto. Zeus commuted his sons sentence to a years term as herdsman to a human, King Admetus. During his term in mortal servitude, Apollo grew fond of Admetus, a man doomed to die young. Since there was no longer an Asclepius with his Medusa-potion to resurrect the king, Admetus would be gone forever when he died. As a favor, Apollo negotiated a way for Admetus to avoid Death. If someone would die for Admetus, Death would let him go. The only person willing to make such a sacrifice was Admetus beloved wife, Alcestis. On the day Alcestis was substituted for Admetus and given to Death, Hercules arrived at the palace. He wondered about the display of mourning. Admetus tried to convince him nothing was wrong, but the servants, who missed their mistress, revealed the truth. Hercules set off for the Underworld to arrange for Alcestis return to life. The Offspring of Asclepius Asclepius hadnt been killed immediately after leaving the centaurs school. He had had time to engage in various heroic endeavors, including fathering his share of children. His progeny would and did carry on the healing arts. Sons Machaon and Podalirius led 30 Greek ships to Troy from the city of Eurytos. It is unclear which of the two brothers healed Philoctetes during the Trojan War. Asclepius daughter is Hygeia (connected with our word hygiene), goddess of health. Other children of Asclepius are  Janiscus, Alexenor, Aratus, Hygieia, Aegle, Iaso, and Panaceia. The Name of Asclepius You may find the name of Asclepius spelled Asculapius or Aesculapius (in Latin) and Asklepios (also, in Greek). Shrines of Asclepius The best known of the roughly 200 Greek shrines and temples of Asclepius were at Epidaurus, Cos, and Pergamum. These were places of healing with sanatoria, dream therapy, snakes, regimes of diet and exercise, and baths. The name of such a shrine to Asclepius is asclepieion/asklepieion (pl. asclepieia). Hippocrates is thought to have studied at Cos and Galen at Pergamum. The Vietnam War Essays (426 words) - Vietnam War, Free Essays

The Vietnam War Essays (426 words) - Vietnam War, Free Essays The Vietnam War The Vietnam War was a brutal war that affected millions of people in many different countries. All wars start because their is a difference in people?s opinions, and the Vietnam War was no different. It started because France and a Vietnam leader, Ho Chi Minh, had a difference in opinion about the type of government Vietnam should have. To find out why the war broke out you will have to go back to the 1750?s. This is where the French started their so called protectorate state of Vietnam. For many years the people of Vietnam protested but could not organize into a force powerful enough to resist the French. Then in 1946 a communist educated individual called Ho Chi Minh organized the people of North Vietnam and drove out the French rulers in a war that took eight years. During peace settlements in Geneva they allowed North and South Vietnam to become separate nations, divided on the 17th parallel. This was only to last for two years. After two years the two countries would then vote on a common leader and reunite the two countries once more. This never happened. South Vietnam was afraid that a Communist leader would be chosen and the nation would be in ruins. Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam opposing the canceled election began attacks on Southern Vietnam and remaining French officials to gain co! ntrol of South Vietnam. If North Vietnam was to begin their invasion of South Vietnam the Communist ruler Ho Chi Minh was sure to have complete control over the nation and spread his ideas of communism to neighboring countries. The United States thought that this should not happen so in 1965 the president ordered the bombing of North Vietnam and the landing of US troops in South Vietnam. This then caused North Vietnam to send regular units to the South. That therefore, cause more US troops to become involved. All of this kept building and building until it was a full scale war. The main reason that the Vietnam War broke out was that the old imperial France thought they could keep a so called protectorate state without giving them any freedom. Then a communist leader came along that united the people and took over in the name of freedom. The U.S. thought that if Vietnam became communist then neighboring countries would soon follow. They did not want communism to spread so they tried to stop it. Stop it by war and it did not work out like they thought it would.

A trip Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

A trip - Essay Example Since we had no special plans for the weekend, we halfheartedly decided to go with Oliver. To our surprise, with every passing second, we became more and more excited about the trip. And so, the night before the trip, we failed to contain our excitement and hardly fell asleep. It was a Sunday morning. The time was almost 5:30 a.m. when we heard a familiar honking of a car. It was Oliver. The sun has not fully come out yet, and the house was still dark. Our parents were asleep. Oliver had arranged for our breakfast, so we rushed out as soon as we heard the car horn. Once outside the house, we were greeted by the cool morning breeze. Sliding into the front seat next to Oliver, I grabbed the biggest burger and started munching instantly. In all the excitement, I forgot to pass over Sam’s share in the back seat. A questioning look on Oliver’s face made me realize what I had missed doing. Therefore, I passed Sam his burger; I felt embarrassed. After that, our journey began. As I watched the car drive through the same route, my heart sunk. It was the same route we took almost every weekend with our family. But when Oliver did not take the last turn, the excitement returned. I knew we were headed for â€Å"different†. After twenty five minut es’ drive, we stopped at a roadside densely lined with trees. It seemed like a jungle. When Oliver got out of the car, I realized it was the starting point of our trip. The plan was to meet our usual hiking trail but through the jungle. Taking only a few steps into the trees, we found ourselves standing amidst a dense forest. The sounds of birds, insects and animals echoed all around us. Thick vegetation grew everywhere. The shelter of leaves blocked the sun, so it was slightly darker. The air was damp and had a strange smell. Oliver was leading the way, and we were tracing his steps. Sam was in front of me. The way Oliver was making his way through the bushes and trees was admirable as I could hardly see any path. I

PaY For Play Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

PaY For Play - Essay Example Sports players are a huge asset for the colleges because they enhance the college reputation and prestige. One of the realities of the current university and college system is that they derive a residual level of profitability from whatever sports programs that the school offers. This residual level of revenue has come to be an important funding stream that colleges and universities rely on to ameliorate the economic pressures of hard times. However, regardless of the degree of revenue that these institutions are able to garner as a result of their sports programs, the student athletes are not paid for their work outside the scholarships that they are oftentimes offered as an incentive to play the game. However, it is normally seen that the athletes or sportsmen have not given much consideration when it comes to upholding their rights. When it came to my college, I saw that our college athletes were not given due respect with regard to the reward structure. In our society college ath letes undergo much sacrifice and bring money but not be paid in return. I myself have been a football player in college and I understand what it means to be able to have spending money to survive during the university experience; a luxury that those not playing sports can readily achieve merely by picking up a part time job while in school. Thus, following inductive reasoning I can say that those college athletes who participate in major money making sports, such as football in the SEC, should be paid and not just in kind. The approach of ethos, pathos and logos is used in this paper to prove the point. For logical approach inductive reasoning is used based on facts, ethical appeal is used after considering views of different authors regarding payment of college athletes and an emotional appeal also lies underneath the arguments presented in the paper. Background of Sports Play at College and Problems in Pay for Play: Regulation regarding paying college athletes should be changed in order to compensate athletes and payment should be made mandatory. This is because these players bring in a lot of money and put in too much work for that without earning a paycheck. The idea of sports played in college came into existence during 1850. Soon after, sports achieved its place in the curriculum of the college activities. Gradually colleges started to prepare for the intercollegiate competition as a mean of boosting the self confidence and as a method of learning to overcome the obstacles in life. The first intercollegiate athletic competition held in America was secondary to the promotional wishes and was launched as a commercial venture. It has been regarded as the perfect physical activity and the desire of the young men. The competitive spirit and vigor which are parts of college sports enhanced the mental and physical pleasure of the students. The college authorities elaborately planned sports activities which motivated the students immensely and sports events at c ollege and national levels became a prestigious venture and money making phenomena for college authorities. The media kept the young athletes in the lime light and the scholarship provided by colleges to them stood as a bonus (Smith, 2011, pp. 1-8). However one should consider their importance to the colleges and their role as revenue earners in order to compensate them in cash and kind. Here lies the ethical appeal. Playing college sports has evolved to be an honor

Explain the Differences Between Panglosss Philosophy Essay Example for Free

Explain the Differences Between Panglosss Philosophy Essay Pangloss’s philosophy of life is that all is for the best in the â€Å"best of all possible worlds. † This optimistic philosophy actually is the key element of Voltaire’s satire. Pangloss’s philosophy is against the ideas of the Enlightenment period. Pangloss believes that a powerful God had created the world and that, therefore, the world must be perfect. When creatures of the world, see something as wrong or evil, it is because they do not understand the ultimate good that will come out of it. Voltaire satirically shows the reader that Pangloss is not a believable character. Voltaire illustrates this by showing us that he keeps his optimistic thought even when he is imprisoned. Pangloss ignores any evidence that contradicts his initial opinion. He also uses illogical arguments to support his beliefs. Pangloss’s philosophy tries to impose a passive attitude toward all that is wrong in the world. If the world is the best one possible, then there is no reason to make any effort to change things. Martin is more believable than Pangloss, not because he is more sophisticated, but because he is smarter and more likely to draw conclusions with which we can identify. Martin had been robbed by his wife and beaten by his son and deserted by his daughter and also lived financial setbacks, and therefore he’s a pessimist whereas Pangloss is an optimist. He uses his experiences to judge the world whereas Pangloss was merely using a theory. As a result, Martin is more insightful than Pangloss to foresee events that will happen. Even though Martin’s philosophy is more believable than Pangloss’s, he’s still not good at predicting how some people will behave because his philosophy is coming from extreme pessimism. Therefore it might not be wrong to say that Voltaire is trying to prove that we need flexible thought in our lives based on real evidence. Both philosophers will ultimately fail because there’s no room for exceptions in their beliefs. Candide starts his journey with the influence of Pangloss’s belief of â€Å"best of all possible worlds†. Pangloss and Candide, suffer and witness a wide variety of horrors and tragedies together. During these tragedies, Pangloss’s s philosophy proves to be useless and even destructive at the end, because it prevents them from making realistic judgments. For example while Jacques was drowning, Pangloss doesn’t let Candide save him by saying that the bay of Lisbon had been formed for this Anabaptist to drown in. Also when Candide was buried under the rubble of the Lisbon earthquake, he asked for oil and wine because he was dying, but Pangloss ignored him and still tried to reason with the causes of the earthquake. At the end Candide rejects his philosophy of optimism and as he and his servant Cacambo travel and go through more horrors, Candide starts believing a pessimistic view of life. When Candide meets Martin, they set sail together and Martin is just the opposite of Pangloss. He does not believe that everything is for the best in this world. Even though Candide tries to oppose Martin by talking about free will but it does not solve the problem of presence of evil in the world. In general, Martin’s arguments seem more reasonable than Pangloss’s ideas. But, like Pangloss, Martin believes so firmly in his own view of the world that he is not flexible and usually dismisses real evidence that contradicts his philosophy. When Candide cannot find Cunegonde, Martin shows the bad influence of his pessimism. Instead of attempting to comfort his friend, Martin uses Candide’s distress to further confirm his own world-view. Just like Pangloss’s optimism, Martin’s pessimism also keeps him from taking initiative to improve the world.

The Egyptian Culture Reflected in Worship Essay -- Egypt

The Egyptian Culture Reflected in Worship Much of our knowledge about ancient Egyptian culture is based on elaborate worship rituals related to death and the afterlife. Egyptians were devoted to their gods and to their pharaohs who were gods on earth, as demonstrated by their willingness to build the pyramids for the safe passage of their leaders into the afterlife. Understanding the development of Egyptian society and their theological system requires a basic knowledge of the geography of the area. The Nile River Valley and Nile Delta, circa 4000-5000 BCE, was comprised of about 12,000 square miles of arable land. The villages and towns of ancient Egypt were found up and down the length of the Nile with most of the population living below the First Cataract (located approximately at present day Aswan). The Egyptians were accomplished farmers. They knew the Nile would flood each year and bring new life and abundant grain. The Nile's flooding was predictable and left rich new deposits of silt for new crops, making irrigation easy to plan. A basin irrigation system allowed the flood waters to flow gently into each field, cleansing and renewing the earth each year. The virtual isolation of the Nile Valley allowed Egyptian civilization to develop unthreatened by its neighbors. The Mediterranean Sea lay to the north, vast deserts were found to the east and west, and dense jungle lay to the south. An invader would have to be quite determined to brave the elements that protected the Nile Valley civilization. Since Egyptian civilization was a product, in many ways, of the natural forces that surrounded its people, the people looked to nature to explain the unexplainable. Egyptian gods were depicted as wise, caring, predicta... ...ring the shadow land that was the double of the Nile Delta. No famine or sorrows bothered him in this blessed afterlife. If his heart weighed too heavy, he would be thrown to the animal gods who tear him to shreds. The hieroglyphs left by the priests of ancient Egypt were meant to provide the dead with a guide to the afterlife, to instruct the Ka what it should do in every test as it navigated the after world. Those same hieroglyphs have done much more. They have provided present day scholars with an amazing record of a culture that existed thousands of years ago and some insight into the minds of the people who lived in that culture. Through those ancient writings we have come to know how the ancient Egyptians worshiped, how they viewed their leaders, how they thought they should relate to one another, and how they viewed their role in this life and the next one.

Extended Definiton of Emo

Frances Louise Y. GarayFinal Draft of Extended Definition Paper 11048492 A57 â€Å"Emo† â€Å"I wish my lawn mower was emo so it would cut itself. † Isn’t the word â€Å"emo† now a very familiar word to refer a person who is feeling gloomy, heartbroken and depressed? Nowadays, the word â€Å"emo† is used as an adjective to describe a person who cuts himself or a person who feels depressed whenever the rain is pouring hard and stares at it while listening to some emotional songs or â€Å"senti† songs.Emo is an abbreviation of â€Å"emotional hardcore† that originated in the mid-1980’s from the hardcore puck movement of Washington, D. C. Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. Emo, in modern time, used to describe people who are depressed and cut themselves. Emo is a young person who is considered to be over-emotional or stereotypically emo. The word à ¢â‚¬Å"emo† actually means a s something of a put-down for the kids who really like â€Å"Rites of Spring† and â€Å"Indian Summer† (Emo bands). The word â€Å"emo† is now used to describe people who have fashion like side bangs, tight pants, wearing black or sweater vest, chains and spiky bracelets. Emo people usually wear dark clothes and tight pants. However, happy people are usually seen wearing and light-colored clothes. In addition, a happy person has an aura of an uplifting, cheerful and happy-go-lucky type of person. They also have an aura that makes you comfortable and delightful. Unlike an emo person, it can give you a bad feeling, weird and pessimistic type of person when you see them.In terms of attitude, an emo person is usually depressed, emotional, dramatic, sensitive, expressive and heartbroken. They are also always feeling insecure and in pain. They have low self-esteem and they are anti-social. In contrast, a happy person has an attitude of being an optimistic, smiling, open-minded, jolly, confident and sociable type of person. Emo’s confessional lyrics are the reasons why people used the word â€Å"emo† to describe a person who is being dramatic, emotional and expressive to what they feel.Because of the lyrics of the song about the pain they felt and it should be expressed, it encouraged teenagers to cut themselves. It also encouraged them to become a loner and lose their ego because of their problems to other people. Lastly, it encouraged them to have a fashion trend of wearing black clothes and punk hairstyles because of the emo bands that made this fashion trend famous. Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive often confessional lyrics. The word â€Å"emo† is now used to describe people who are wearing dark clothes and tight pants, emotional and pessimistic kind of person. Because of this, it encouraged them to be different in society, to be a loser and to cut themselves. The word emo helped us in defining things around us. Instead of saying that person looks so depressed or is being so sad, we can just say ‘he’s just being emo today. ’ Though words can change its meaning overtime, it still, somehow contain the same thought of how the word was first used.
